About City of Heroes
City of Heroes (2004) launched April 2004 with Paragon City hero creation and costume depth. City of Villains (2005) arrived October 2005 as standalone villain game in Rogue Isles for the same fee, winning MMO of the year tied with Guild Wars.
Going Rogue (2010) added Praetoria mirror universe with alignment switching between Hero, Villain, Vigilante and Rogue in August 2010. Twenty three free Issues ran to May 2012 before NCsoft closed Paragon Studios August 2012 and shut servers November 30, 2012. Play in release order, since Praetoria assumes both prior cities. Homecoming now hosts community servers.
Good to know
Release order tracks morality growth from heroes only to villains to side switching. Start with City of Heroes for Paragon tutorial that teaches archetypes. Add Villains for Rogue Isles contrast, then Going Rogue last for Praetoria gray choices. The live service is complete at shutdown, with Homecoming carrying unofficial play after 2019 licensing talks.
