About Columns
Columns starts in 1990 as Sega’s jewel stacker against Tetris with 3 high falls and magic gems. Columns II from 1990 adds versus play for two players, while III from 1993 adds flash gems and multiplayer options across pits. The goal stays simple: match 3 in a pit.
Stack Columns from 1994 moves into 3D pits, while Taisen Versus Puyo Puyo mixes both puzzle lines. Sega Ages Columns from 2021 revives the original online. The series has no story beyond the next pit, so release order suits versus feel over plot.
Good to know
Start with the 1990 original or Sega Ages version for the base rules well, then take III for versus play with friends. Stack suits 3D curiosity rather than a start. Taisen fits last as the crossover extra for puzzle fans. No new Columns had been dated as of September 2026, so Ages stands as the modern entry point.
