About Dark Souls
Dark Souls began with Demon's Souls (2009) on PS3 about the colorless fog over Boletaria. Dark Souls (2011) moved to Lordran with the linking of the fire, followed by Dark Souls II (2014) in Drangleic and Dark Souls III (2016) closing the cycle in Lothric. Bluepoint's Demon's Souls Remake (2020) and the Dark Souls Remastered (2018) modernized the bookends.
FromSoftware moved on to Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring after 2016, with director Hidetaka Miyazaki saying the Dark Souls story closed by design. No fourth game has been announced, leaving the trilogy plus its predecessor as the complete run.
Good to know
Play in release order starting with the Remake or Remastered versions, since each game assumes mastery of rolling, stamina and patience from the last. Dark Souls II splits fans with its different director and looser world links, so expect a shift in feel rather than a plot break.
