Dragon Quest Play Order

The Dragon Quest games by trilogy from Erdrick through Zenithian to standalone, why XI S is still the best entry point, where the HD-2D remakes and VII Reimagined from February 2026 fit, and why XII stays undated.

About Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest tells standalone stories per game, so play order is about taste with the trilogies as guides. The Erdrick run covers I through III, the Zenithian run covers IV through VI, and VII through XI plus the Monsters spin-offs each stand alone.

The HD-2D remakes refresh the start: III in 2024, then I and II together in October 2025, and VII Reimagined in February 2026 as the diorama overhaul. Dragon Quest XII was announced with no date, so XI S remains the modern endpoint with the remakes as alternates.

Good to know

New players should start with XI S, then the HD-2D trilogy of III plus I and II, since those show classic and modern design at their best. Release order works for veterans chasing history, while story order only matters inside the two trilogies. XII stays yearless until Square Enix dates it, and VII Reimagined is the newest way into the middle era.
