About Dynasty Warriors
Dynasty Warriors retells China's Three Kingdoms era as crowd clearing musou action from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force. The numbered run starts properly with Dynasty Warriors 2 in 2000, since the 1997 original is a one on one fighter, and runs through Dynasty Warriors 9 to the Origins reboot in 2025.
Play in release order. Every entry retells the same history with a new combat system, so the mechanics evolve cleanly from 2 to Origins. Xtreme Legends and Empires expansions remix each base game and are best played right after their parent entry rather than as entry points.
Good to know
Release order is the recommended order because systems and rosters build with each game, and no story continuity needs untangling. The 1997 fighter sits outside the musou line as a curiosity for completists. A Complete Edition remaster of Dynasty Warriors 3 is listed for 2026 and tracked separately until it ships.
