About Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy is not one story. Each numbered entry brings its own cast, its own world and its own rules, with nothing carried over except the chocobos, the summoned beasts and the occasional character name. That dissolves the usual watch order problem: there is nothing to reorder, and the list below is simply the series as Square Enix built it, from the 1987 Famicom original to Final Fantasy XVI in 2023.
Two entries bend the pattern. Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO whose narrative runs through its expansions, and the seventh game spawned a remake trilogy that reworks the plot rather than retelling it straight.
Good to know
Sequels follow their base game: X-2 after X, then XIII-2 and Lightning Returns after XIII, and the seventh game's remake series in release order, with Final Fantasy VII Revelation dated April 8, 2027. The spinoff Final Fantasy Resonance arrives October 22, 2026. Final Fantasy XVII has only been teased by staff, with no announcement as of September 2026.
