About Frictional Games
Penumbra: Overture from 2007 starts the run with physics puzzles and a wolf in a Greenland mine, and Black Plague plus Requiem from 2008 close that trilogy. Amnesia: The Dark Descent from 2010 drops combat entirely, trading weapons for oil, tinderboxes, and a draining sanity meter. The formula reset horror toward helplessness.
Soma from 2015 moves the dread underwater with questions about copied minds, and Amnesia: Rebirth from 2020 plus The Bunker from 2023 return to the series with desert and bunker settings. A Machine for Pigs from 2013 was built by another studio, so it sits outside this list. Play in release order, since each game iterates on the same no-combat grammar.
Good to know
The house rule is simple: you cannot fight, so run, hide, and manage light. Dark Descent stays the entry point for the series. Soma leans philosophical and scares less while asking more, which splits the fanbase. Rebirth and The Bunker add hub areas and objectives, so veterans should expect longer loops. Keep A Machine for Pigs for after, since its design belongs to its own makers.
