About Nier
Nier follows Yoko Taro's connected universe in release order across three games plus an anime. Gestalt and Replicant from 2010 tell the same collapse from a father and brother view, Automata from 2017 jumps millennia ahead with 2B and 9S through five endings, and Replicant ver.1.22 from 2021 remakes the brother version.
The Automata anime Ver1.1a from 2023 to 2024 retells the game with rearranged routes as a companion. Drakengard sits behind Nier as the distant origin, but only its final ending matters as homework, so the Nier games stand alone without it.
Good to know
Play Replicant ver.1.22, then Automata through ending E, since Automata assumes the world state the first game leaves. The 2010 originals can be skipped once the remake is played. Watch the anime after Automata as a companion rather than a replacement, and expect no dated next game, since Taro's team has announced nothing beyond concerts and stage plays.
