About Prototype
Prototype from 2009 follows Alex Mercer waking with shape shifting powers in a virus hit New York, hunting his own past across Manhattan. Prototype 2 from April 2012 switches to Sgt. James Heller, who blames Mercer for his family and takes the virus himself to hunt him down.
The sequel closes the Blacklight story and flips Mercer into the villain. A 2015 Biohazard Bundle re-released both games on PS4 and Xbox One with no new content. Activision said the IP did not find a wide audience and Radical was cut back, so no third game has ever been announced.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order. Prototype 2 starts after the first game ends in the same city, so release order is the only path. Play the 2009 game first. Heller motives and Mercer turn make little sense without it. The series is dormant as of September 2026 under Xbox ownership with no sequel in work.
