About Ristar
Ristar stars a cartoon shooting star whose stretchable arms grab enemies, swing from bars and launch headbutts. The Genesis game was built by Sonic Team staff and released in early 1995, late in the console's life, pairing bright planet themes with bosses designed around the grab. It reads like a lost Sonic relative with its own rhythm and timing.
The Game Gear Ristar landed the same month from Japan System House with remixed stage themes, exclusive planets such as a pirate ship world, and different bosses. Its North American release lost an entire level from the second planet. The Genesis game later returned on compilations and the Genesis Mini 2, while the handheld entry stayed rare outside one plug-and-play reissue.
Good to know
Release order and story order need no separate lists here, since both games tell a light planet-hopping rescue with no shared timeline to untangle. Play the Genesis original first and the Game Gear game second. Treat the handheld version as a distinct game rather than a port, because its levels, bosses and star collecting differ. The Genesis original is the easy one to find on modern compilations.
