About Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic began on the Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic 2 (1992), Sonic 3 and Knuckles (1994) and Sonic CD (1993). The series jumped to 3D with Sonic Adventure (1998) and Adventure 2 (2001), then ran through Heroes, Shadow, the 2008 Werehog entry, Colors and Generations (2011). Recent entries include Mania (2017), Forces (2017), Frontiers (2022), Superstars (2023) and Shadow Generations (2024).
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds arrived September 25, 2025 as the latest release. The Paramount movies run in their own continuity and the IDW comics extend the games, but neither gates the games themselves.
Good to know
Start with Sonic Mania for Classic style or Generations for a tour of both eras, since both assume nothing. The story across games is thin and resets often, so playing out of order costs little beyond missing returning faces like Shadow. Skip the 2006 reboot unless you want history, since even SEGA treats it as the low point worth bypassing.
