About Spyro
Spyro starts with Insomniac's PlayStation trilogy: the Dragon in 1998 about freed dragons, Ripto's Rage in 1999 in Avalar with new moves, and Year of the Dragon in 2000 adding playable friends. Reignited Trilogy from 2018 remakes all three faithfully with modern controls and unifies moves across games, making it the recommended versions. The Legend of Spyro from 2006 reboots darker across three games with Dawn of the Dragon closing it.
Skylanders from 2011 spins Spyro into toys-to-life with its own continuity across six games. Play one branch straight: originals or Reignited, then Legend, then Skylanders only for completists. The branches share names but no story, and Reignited maps level-for-level onto the originals.
Good to know
Play Reignited over the originals unless purism calls: same layouts with modern handling and Tom Kenny throughout. The Legend trilogy needs nothing before it as a full reboot, and Skylanders needs nothing at all as a separate genre. Handheld Season of Ice and similar spinoffs stay outside the list. No new mainline Spyro has a date, which leaves Reignited as the current canon presentation.
