Release OrderRecommended
0 / 4 playedRelease order. The intended experience: mystery first, prequel second, sequel third, Heart of Chornobyl last.
- 1 S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl The entry point. Amnesiac Marked One, the Strelok hunt, the Zone at its most mysterious.
- 2 S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky Prequel starring mercenary Scar. Play second; its faction war assumes you know the Zone.
- 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Prypiat Direct sequel as Major Degtyarev investigating crashed military helicopters. Do not start here.
- 4 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Full sequel as Skif, years later. Rough 2024 launch, heavily patched since.
Chronological Order
0 / 4 playedStory order for replays. Clear Sky first spoils Shadow of Chornobyl, so avoid it on a first run.

About S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
This play order recommends release order: Shadow of Chornobyl (2007), Clear Sky (2008), Call of Prypiat (2009), then Heart of Chornobyl (2024). GSC Game World built each game assuming knowledge of the last, and Shadow of Chornobyl gives the best introduction to the Zone, its factions and its central mystery.
Clear Sky is a prequel set a year before the first game, so a second chronological list is included below for replays. New players should start with Shadow of Chornobyl, on PC or through the Legends of the Zone Trilogy console ports, and save the prequel for second.
Good to know
Chronological order spoils the first game's central reveal about the Marked One, which is why release order stays recommended. Heart of Chornobyl launched November 20, 2024 after war-delayed development and a rough buggy launch; GSC Game World has patched it heavily since. Legends of the Zone Trilogy brought the original three games to consoles in 2024, with an Enhanced Edition following in May 2025.
