About Total War
Total War pairs turn based maps with real time battles from feudal Japan onward. Shogun in 2000 plus Medieval in 2002 set province taxes, Rome in 2004 defined legion play, Medieval II in 2006 widened crusades, and Empire in 2009 moved to gunpowder seas. Later lines run Napoleon, Shogun 2, Rome II, Attila and the Warhammer trilogy from 2016 to 2022.
Three Kingdoms in 2019, Troy in 2020 and Pharaoh in 2023 close the recent history run. Entries stand alone by era with no story order to follow. New players often start with Shogun 2, Rome II, Warhammer II or Pharaoh for tutorials and population.
Good to know
Release order shows sieges and diplomacy grow, but start with the era you like most. Shogun 2 remains the cleanest history loop, Warhammer II runs widest with magic, and Pharaoh plays newest with dynasties. DLC belongs with its base game rather than apart. Treat Pharaoh as latest rather than last, since Creative Assembly keeps the line active with patches.
