About Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles blends turn-based tactics with real-time aiming in a watercolor version of 1930s Europe. The 2008 original follows Squad 7 through the Second Europan War and remains the high point. Its sequels move sideways: VC II (2010) to a military academy, VC III (2011, Japan-only) to a penal squad, and VC4 (2018) back to the original war with a new squad.
Release order works, with one tweak: the 2016 remaster of the first game is the version to buy, and the 2009 anime adapts the original, best watched after it. VC III never left Japan officially, so most players will skip to VC4. The stories stand alone apart from shared history, so newcomers can also start at 1 or 4.
Good to know
VC II is PSP-only and VC III has no official English release, which is why both are often skipped: fan translations of III exist for the determined. The 2009 anime follows the first game closely with anime-original subplots, so it adds color but no required plot. DLC side stories for 1 and 4 slot after their main campaigns. Sega has announced no fifth game, so VC4 from 2018 is the current endpoint.
