About Wizardry

Wizardry from Sir-Tech set the party dungeon crawler template. The first trilogy covers Proving Grounds, Knight of Diamonds and Legacy of Llylgamyn in 1981 to 1983 with transferable parties. Return of Werdna in 1987 flips sides, Heart of the Maelstrom follows in 1988.

Bane of the Cosmic Forge in 1990 and Crusaders of the Dark Savant in 1992 move to larger worlds, closing with Wizardry 8 in November 2001. Japan kept the line alive with Tale of the Forsaken Land in 2001 and the live service Variants Daphne from October 2024, which passed two million downloads by July 2025.

Good to know

Play 1 through 8 in release order and import parties where the games allow it, since the early trilogy rewards carried characters. Return of Werdna expects series veterans and punishes new parties hard. Treat Forsaken Land and Daphne as separate branches after 8, since they start fresh with no imports.
