About Before Trilogy
The Before films follow Jesse and Celine across 18 years. Before Sunrise from 1995 covers one night in Vienna. Before Sunset from 2004 catches them nine years later in Paris. Before Midnight from 2013 finds them married with kids in Greece.
Director Richard Linklater shot each film nine years apart with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy co-writing. The dialogue was built from long takes and real conversation. A fourth film has been discussed for years but the cast passed on the idea in 2021, and nothing is in production as of September 2026.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order. The nine year gaps are real and written into the plot, so release order is story order by design. Watch all three in one stretch if you can. The films are short and each one reframes what you thought the last one meant. That is the whole point of the series.
