About The Cannonball Run
The Cannonball Run from 1981 turns the outlaw coast-to-coast race into a star-packed comedy with Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise and Jackie Chan. Hal Needham's follow-up to Smokey's success earned huge box office on pure ensemble charm.
Cannonball Run II followed in 1984 with most of the gang back, and Speed Zone closed the series in 1989 with a new cast. The races never connect, so release order is the tour. Start with the original for the peak lineup, then take the sequels as diminishing victory laps.
Good to know
Release order tours three standalone races. The original's cast remains the draw, part two replays it faithfully, and Speed Zone recasts almost everything. Real Cannonball history buffs should know the films spoof Brock Yates's actual races loosely. Nothing further has been announced, so the three films are complete.
