About Richard Lester
Richard Lester, born January 19, 1932 and still living at 94, broke through with A Hard Day's Night in 1964 and Help! in 1965, shot with a quick comic rhythm. The Knack from 1965 won at Cannes, then How I Won the War from 1967 and Petulia from 1968 showed a sharper satirical edge beneath the jokes.
The Three Musketeers from 1973 and Juggernaut from 1974 moved him into large scale adventure and suspense, followed by the autumnal Robin and Marian from 1976. Superman II from 1980 and The Return of the Musketeers from 1989 close the run. Release order tracks the shift from pop energy to classical craft.
Good to know
Lester is retired but living, so this guide is marked ongoing even though no new film has appeared since 1989. The Musketeers films were shot together, and many viewers pair The Three Musketeers with The Four Musketeers from 1974. Superman II carries a known authorship split with Richard Donner, and this list follows the released Lester cut from 1980.
