About Cars
Cars runs three Pixar films about McQueen's arc from rookie to mentor: the 2006 Radiator Springs original, the 2011 spy detour with Mater, and the 2017 Cruz Ramirez handoff. The Planes duology from 2013 and 2014 spins Dusty Crophopper off into the same world from Disneytoon. Cars Toons shorts from 2008 to 2014 and Cars on the Road from 2022 fill gaps as optional extras.
Release order is story order for the films, with Planes slotting after Cars 2 in spirit. Lightning Racers was announced for Disney Jr. in 2027 with the original voices back, which would extend the run. Until it airs, the three films plus Planes form the complete movie path and the shorts stay movable.
Good to know
Watch the three Pixar films in release order, then Planes as a spinoff extra. Cars 2 divides fans but sets up Mater's role in the third film's mentorship theme, so skipping it weakens the arc. The Toons and Road series assume the films seen and can go any time after. Lightning Racers has a 2027 date but no episodes yet, so it waits outside the list until it premieres.
