About Castle Freak
Castle Freak exists as two films twenty five years apart. Stuart Gordon's 1995 original traps a family in an Italian castle with a creature in the basement, loosely adapting Lovecraft, while the 2020 reimagining moves the premise to Albania with a new cast.
Watch the original before the remake since the later film riffs on the same setup. Produced by 1995 star Barbara Crampton, the Shudder version works standalone but lands better once the Gordon version sets expectations for the basement reveal.
Good to know
Release order is the viewing order since the two films share a premise rather than continuity, so no chronological list is needed. Talk of an expanded Lovecraft universe and a prequel concept never reached production as of 2026. Both films run feature length with no shorts or extras attached to either release.
