Donald Cammell Watch Order

All four Donald Cammell features in release order, from Performance in 1970 through Demon Seed in 1977 and White of the Eye in 1987 to Wild Side in 1995. Release order is the only sensible path since the films share themes of identity and control but no common plot.

About Donald Cammell

Scottish painter turned filmmaker Donald Cammell co-directed Performance in 1970 with Nicolas Roeg, a London gangster and rock star identity swap with James Fox and Mick Jagger that was shot in 1968 and held back until 1970. Demon Seed followed in 1977, a closed room science fiction thriller with Julie Christie trapped by a home computer based on the Dean Koontz novel.

White of the Eye arrived in 1987, an Arizona desert serial killer study with David Keith shot through with cross cutting and music video rhythm. Wild Side closed the run in 1995, a Los Angeles crime and erotic drama later reworked by its producers. Cammell died on April 24, 1996, and the director's cut of Wild Side appeared after his death. Good to know

Performance was filmed in 1968 but released in 1970, which explains the gap in some filmographies. Demon Seed credits list 1977 in most sources, White of the Eye is listed as 1987 after festival play, and Wild Side premiered in 1995 with wider release in 1996. Cammell died by suicide in 1996 after losing control of Wild Side. The four films stand alone, so do not look for a timeline order. Start with Performance, then pick Demon Seed for horror or White of the Eye for cult crime.
