About Douglas Sirk
Douglas Sirk (1897-1987) was a German-born director whose lush Universal melodramas were dismissed as soap operas on release and later hailed as sharp critiques of American life. His core run pairs Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson in Magnificent Obsession (1954) and All That Heaven Allows (1955), peaks with Written on the Wind (1956), and closes with Imitation of Life (1959).
These are separate stories, so release order works best. This list covers the essential Universal years in sequence, with a note on each entry. Imitation of Life was his final Hollywood film and the biggest hit of his career.
Good to know
Sirk retired from Hollywood in 1959 and died in 1987, so this list is complete. Critics of the time underrated him; directors like Fassbinder and Todd Haynes later championed his work, with Haynes's Far From Heaven (2002) modeled directly on All That Heaven Allows. Magnificent Obsession and All That Heaven Allows pair well as a starting double feature.
