About George Cukor
Holiday from 1938 pairs Hepburn and Grant as free spirits against a stiff family, and The Women from 1939 runs an all female cast through divorce gossip. The Philadelphia Story from 1940 follows with a socialite caught between an ex husband and a reporter, winning Stewart his Oscar.
Gaslight from 1944 turns the same director toward thriller, with Bergman doubting her senses in a gaslit house. Adam's Rib from 1949 and Born Yesterday from 1950 return to comedy, the first pitting married lawyers against each other. A Star Is Born from 1954 gives Garland her comeback as a singer eclipsed by her husband, and My Fair Lady from 1964 closes the run with eight Oscars.
Good to know
These films share actors and writers but no story, so any order works and release order shows the craft best. Start with Philadelphia Story for the peerless comedy trio, then Gaslight for the thriller turn. The Women and Holiday play as a pair of late thirties ensemble pieces. My Fair Lady runs nearly three hours, so save it for a night with room to spare.
