About Gerald Thomas
Gerald Thomas directed all thirty Carry On films for producer Peter Rogers, starting with Carry On Sergeant in 1958. The early entries reuse a growing company including Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques, with scripts first by Norman Hudis. Nurse in 1959 and Teacher in 1959 set the workplace farce pattern of small authority figures under siege.
Constable in 1960, Regardless in 1961 and Cruising in 1962 widen the formula to police, odd jobs and a sea cruise. Cabby and Jack, both from 1963, lean on taxi drivers and the navy, while Spying and Cleo, both from 1964, spoof Bond films and the Burton Taylor epic. Watch these ten in release order, since jokes and casting build film to film even though no plot carries over.
Good to know
Each Carry On is a separate story, so any film works alone, but release order shows the cast settling into familiar types. This is a starter pick of the first ten, not the full thirty picture series. The natural continuation is Carry On Cowboy, Screaming, Doctor, Up the Khyber in 1968 and Camping in 1969. Thomas died in 1993, so the series run covered here is complete.
