About Gregg Araki

Gregg Araki is the key American indie voice of the New Queer Cinema wave. The early run from Three Bewildered People in 1987 through The Living End in 1992 sets his style of frank talk and pop music cues. The Teenage Apocalypse trilogy of Totally Fucked Up in 1993, The Doom Generation in 1995 and Nowhere in 1997 follows restless teens in Los Angeles.

Splendor from 1999 lightens the tone, then Mysterious Skin from 2004 adapts Scott Heim and plays as straight drama. Smiley Face from 2007 is a stoner day out, Kaboom from 2010 won the first Queer Palm at Cannes, and White Bird in a Blizzard from 2014 closes the run with a missing mother mystery set in the eighties.

Good to know

There is no shared continuity, so release order is the viewing order. The trilogy titles share a mood, not characters, so you can sample one before committing to all three. Mysterious Skin deals with abuse directly and plays heavier than the rest. White Bird in a Blizzard adapts Laura Kasischke and works as a gentle entry point. No new feature had been dated as of October 2026, with TV work filling recent years.
