About Ju-On / The Grudge
Ju-On started as two direct-to-video curses in 2000 from Takashi Shimizu, then the 2002 theatrical Ju-On: The Grudge turned Kayako Saeki and Toshio into J-horror icons. Shimizu then directed the American remake (2004) himself, which is why the two continuities mirror each other instead of one replacing the other.
The curse has no timeline to untangle: every entry is another household stumbling into the same grudge, so watch each continuity in release order. The Japanese run is the core of it, from the 2000 originals through the 2014 reboot duology and the Sadako crossover. The American films retell the premise in English, and the 2020 film and the Origins series work as entry points to that side.
Good to know
Sadako vs Kayako (2016) pits the Ju-On curse against the Ring tapes and is pure crossover fun, not required for either series. The White Ghost and Black Ghost films from 2009 were made for Ju-On's tenth anniversary and sit outside the main line. Ju-On: Origins (2020) is a loose Netflix dramatization of the supposed inspiration, so treat it as a bonus after the Japanese films rather than the start.
