About Happy Gilmore
Happy Gilmore from 1996 follows a failed hockey player who takes up golf to save his grandmother's house, clashing with Shooter McGavin and falling for Virginia along the way. It was a modest hit at release that grew into one of the defining comedies of the decade on cable and home video.
Happy Gilmore 2 arrived on Netflix on July 25, 2025, nearly 30 years later. Sandler returns as a retired champion dragged back onto the tour, with Bowen, McDonald and Stiller all back. Watch the original first. The sequel leans on callbacks that only land if you know the first film.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order here. The sequel picks up decades after the original in real time, so release order is story order by design. New viewers sometimes ask if the sequel stands alone. It does not. The training montages, the villain and the ending all replay beats from 1996, and you need the original fresh in mind to enjoy them.
