About Herbert Wilcox

Herbert Wilcox was one of Britain's most successful producers and directors from the 1920s to the 1950s, best known for the films he made with Anna Neagle. This guide picks ten in release order, opening with the operetta Goodnight, Vienna in 1932 and Bitter Sweet in 1933.

The middle run is the Neagle star build: Nell Gwyn in 1934, Peg of Old Drury in 1935, Victoria the Great in 1937, its sequel Sixty Glorious Years in 1938, and Nurse Edith Cavell in 1939. It closes with the wartime biopic They Flew Alone in 1942, the romance The Courtneys of Curzon Street in 1947, and Odette in 1950. Watch in release order to follow the partnership grow.

Good to know

Almost every film here stars Anna Neagle, Wilcox's wife and muse, so this guide doubles as her essential screen story. Release order is the only order needed, since these are standalone features. Film title spelling verified as Nell Gwyn for the 1934 Neagle version, matching BFI and Wikipedia. Wilcox died in 1977, so this guide is completed.
