About Highlander

The 1986 Highlander works because it is self-contained: Connor MacLeod's centuries flash by, the Gathering ends, and the Prize is won. Every sequel since has had to unpick that ending, which is why the series continuity reads like a series of polite retcons. Highlander II is routinely disowned, including by the franchise itself.

The cleanest path is release order with one adjustment in your head: the TV series with Duncan MacLeod follows the first film and ignores the numbered sequels, and Endgame (2000) is where the two MacLeods finally meet. The animated series and the 2007 anime film are standalone takes. A full reboot with Henry Cavill filmed through 2026 and is expected in 2027.

Good to know

Highlander II exists in two cuts and neither fits comfortably, so treat it as apocrypha: the Renegade cut at least drops the alien-planet explanation for something closer to the original spirit. The Raven spinoff follows Amanda and needs no setup beyond the series. The Source (2007) was meant to launch a trilogy that never happened, so expect an unresolved ending. The 2027 reboot is a fresh start, not a sequel.
