About Hiroshi Inagaki
Hiroshi Inagaki directed Toho samurai myths about Musashi's duels and rickshaw pullers' pride. Samurai I starts Miyamoto Musashi's Otsu and Otsu rivalry in 1954. Duel at Ichijoji Temple continues the Yagyu school fights in 1955. Duel at Ganryu Island closes the trilogy with the Sasaki Kojiro beach duel in 1956.
The Rickshaw Man follows a rickshaw puller raising an officer's son in 1958 and won the Golden Lion. Watching in order shows Inagaki moving from sword-dance myth to town melodrama while keeping the same festival color. The trilogy shares characters, so order matters for Musashi's growth.
Good to know
Watch Samurai I through III in order, then enjoy Rickshaw Man. The trilogy tells one life from 1600 to 1612, so reordering would spoil who survives each duel. Rickshaw Man stands alone and can be watched first for tone, but trilogy order is fixed. All four stream with subtitles via Toho restorations.
