About Hiroshi Teshigahara
Hiroshi Teshigahara directed stark collaborations with novelist Kobo Abe about men trapped by work and identity. Pitfall follows a drifter lured to a mining ghost town in 1962. Woman in the Dunes strands an entomologist in a sand pit with a widow in 1964.
The Face of Another closes the essential run with a disfigured engineer testing a lifelike mask in 1966. Watching in order shows Teshigahara tightening from mystery to fable while keeping the same dune-like sound design. The films share entrapment rather than characters, so order reveals method growth.
Good to know
Watch in release order. The three titles are standalone, so no spoilers carry over. Starting with Pitfall first explains Teshigahara's union-ghost roots before the later Abe masterpieces. All three stream with subtitles via Criterion. Later Antonio Gaudi documentary and Rikyu tea-master film can be explored after these essentials.
