About Illumination
Illumination started with Despicable Me in 2010 and never really left Gru's orbit, with Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) turning the sidekicks into the main event. Between those came Hop (2011), The Lorax (2012), The Secret Life of Pets (2016), Sing (2016), The Grinch (2018) and Sing 2 (2021), each built as a bright family comedy with a radio-ready soundtrack.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) became the studio's biggest hit at over a billion dollars, followed by Migration (2023) and Despicable Me 4 (2024). The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrived April 1, 2026, with Minions and Monsters following on July 1, 2026. Nothing connects except the Minions titles, so release order is the full answer and each franchise watches fine on its own.
Good to know
Seventeen theatrical features, all in release order, with the two 2026 releases included. The Despicable Me and Minions titles form one loose timeline, while everything else stands alone. An untitled Illumination event film is set for April 16, 2027, with a third Minions-adjacent project and Sing 3 in development. Shorts and the holiday specials are left out. Start anywhere, but keep each franchise in release order.
