About John Waters
John Waters started with the Dreamlanders in Baltimore, and Pink Flamingos in 1972 with Divine still defines trash cinema. Female Trouble in 1974 and Desperate Living in 1977 pushed the bad taste further with cheaper stock and bigger wigs. Polyester in 1981 introduced Odorama cards, then Hairspray in 1988 broke him into the mainstream with Ricki Lake and a beehive that conquered the multiplex.
Cry-Baby in 1990 kept the fifties pastiche going with Johnny Depp, and Serial Mom in 1994 gave Kathleen Turner a suburban killing spree. Pecker in 1998, Cecil B. Demented in 2000 and A Dirty Shame in 2004 closed the run with showbiz satire. The films share actors and attitude but no plot, so release order simply follows Waters sanding down his edges, then sharpening them again.
Good to know
Waters has not directed a feature since A Dirty Shame in 2004, though he talks about new projects and stays active as a writer and performer, so treat this as paused rather than finished. Early shorts like Mondo Trasho from 1969 are easy bonus viewing before Pink Flamingos. Hairspray later became a Broadway musical and a 2007 remake, both outside this order. Start with Hairspray if Pink Flamingos sounds like too much.
