About Julius Avery
Julius Avery directs muscular genre pieces, from the Perth heist of Son of a Gun in 2014 through the D-Day horror of Overlord in 2018 to the garbage truck heroics of Samaritan in 2022. The Pope Exorcist in 2023 gives Russell Crowe a Vespa riding priest with a sequel tease, keeping the same blunt momentum in Vatican halls that Overlord brought to bunkers.
Overlord remains the recommended start for its tight squad craft, then Samaritan for the Stallone mirror, with Son of a Gun as the crime prelude. The films share no continuity, only a taste for practical sets and last reel pushes that never lets up.
Good to know
No shared plot links these four, so release order is a genre tour from crime to horror to capes to possession. Start with Overlord for the clearest version of his set piece grammar, since its bunker run teaches the Samaritan fights. Son of a Gun plays rougher and earlier, with its romance wobble forgiven once the later control appears. Treat the Exorcist as latest.
