About Marcel Carne
Marcel Carne defined poetic realism with screenwriter Jacques Prevert in the late 1930s. This guide opens with Port of Shadows and Hotel du Nord, both from 1938, then Le Jour Se Leve in 1939, three fatalistic romances starring Jean Gabin or Arletty in foggy working class streets.
Les Visiteurs du Soir followed in 1942 and Children of Paradise in 1945, the latter filmed under wartime strain and widely ranked among the greatest French films. Therese Raquin in 1953, The Cheaters in 1958 and Three Rooms in Manhattan in 1965 show the postwar shift toward youth and exile stories. Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so release order is the viewing order. Carne kept directing into the 1970s, but the eight here cover the essential Prevert years plus three later landmarks. He died in 1996, so this guide is complete. English titles vary by distributor, with Le Quai des brumes as Port of Shadows and Le Jour Se Leve as Daybreak, but the years above are stable across filmographies.
