About Max Ophuls

Max Ophuls started in Germany with Liebelei in 1933, then worked across France, Italy and the Netherlands before reaching Hollywood. Letter from an Unknown Woman in 1948 remains his most loved American film, followed by the noirs Caught and The Reckless Moment, both from 1949.

Back in France he made La Ronde in 1950, Le Plaisir in 1952 and The Earrings of Madame de in 1953, three elegant roundelays of love and money. Lola Montes closed his career in 1955 as a lavish circus framed biography. Watch the eight in release order to see the camera movement grow freer while the view of romance darkens.

Good to know

These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so release order is the viewing order. Ophuls died in 1957 while preparing The Lovers of Montparnasse, which Jacques Becker finished, so that film is not listed here. Early shorts and lost German work are skipped in favor of widely available features. Years above follow standard filmographies, with Lola Montes dated 1955 for its French premiere.
