About Nicholas Ray
Nicholas Ray (1911-1979) was an American director celebrated for vivid widescreen dramas about outsiders. His reputation rests on They Live by Night (1948), In a Lonely Place (1950), Johnny Guitar (1954), Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Bigger Than Life (1956), all made within a single decade.
His features are standalone stories, so release order is the way to go. This list keeps to the key films in the order they opened, with a short note on each. His later European epics are worth less of your time than the 1948-1957 run.
Good to know
Ray died in 1979; his final credit, We Can't Go Home Again (1976), is an experimental student project left unfinished at his death. 55 Days at Peking (1963) was taken over amid production trouble, so it feels less personal than the rest of this list. Newcomers should start with In a Lonely Place and Rebel Without a Cause, his two most accessible films.
