About Open Season
Open Season (2006) was Sony Pictures Animation's first feature, pairing a domesticated grizzly with a fast-talking deer on the eve of hunting season. The original cast, with Ashton Kutcher and Martin Lawrence, only stayed for that first film: the three sequels recast Boog and Elliot and went direct to video.
The story is strictly linear, so release order is the whole answer. Each sequel raises the stakes from open season to a road trip to a circus to a campfire ghost story. The 2023 series Open Season: Call of Nature switches to 2D animation and follows the next generation, which makes it a fine epilogue once the films are done.
Good to know
Set expectations before the sequels: the animation style and voice cast change after the first film, and the tone skews younger with each entry. That said, the sequels keep the same forest and the same core friendships, so kids who love Boog and Elliot will not mind. Call of Nature centers on new characters with the old cast in support, so it plays best as a bonus season after the four films.
