About Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets from 2016 follows Max as Duke joins the home and Snowball hunts them through sewers. Pets 2 from 2019 splits Max, Gidget and Snowball across farm, tiger and vet plots. Both track the same apartment crew with episodic adventures.

Watch the 2016 film then the 2019 sequel. The second recasts Max and assumes you know the apartment roster. Pets 3 is confirmed in development with Meledandri and no date, so the two films form the current released pair. Kevin Hart voices Snowball in both films. Eric Stonestreet voices Duke in the first film.

Good to know

Release order matches story order with no shorts required between films. Tone stays family slapstick throughout both runs. Treat Pets 2 as the latest chapter rather than a finale until the third film actually moves forward. Chris Renaud directed both films for Illumination. Brian Lynch wrote the first film and co-wrote the second.
