About Philippe Garrel
Philippe Garrel has filmed Paris love life since age sixteen. The Secret Child from 1979 sets the silent black and white tone. I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar from 1991 elegizes Nico and won at Venice. The Birth of Love from 1993 and Wild Innocence from 2001 keep the jittery couple talk. Regular Lovers from 2005 stages May 68 through a poet romance and won the Silver Lion.
Frontier of the Dawn from 2008 turns ghostly, A Burning Hot Summer from 2011 burns bright. Jealousy from 2013, In the Shadow of Women from 2015 and Lover for a Day from 2017 form a late trilogy with Louis Garrel. The Salt of Tears from 2020 and The Plough from 2023 close the run so far, the last winning directing at Berlin.
Good to know
Watch in release order, shorts and early experiments sit outside this core. The late trilogy of Jealousy, In the Shadow of Women and Lover for a Day shares actors more than plot, so order still matters for tone. Regular Lovers runs over three hours in black and white. The Plough won the Silver Bear for directing in 2023. Start with Regular Lovers for the peak, then I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar.
