About Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean started in 2003 as a swashbuckling ride adaptation and became Disney's signature pirate saga, following Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann across cursed treasure, sea gods, and fountains of youth. Five films were released between 2003 and 2017, earning a combined $4.5 billion.
The story runs straight through in release order, so one list covers everything. A sixth film has been in development for years but has no script locked, no cast confirmed, and no release date.
Good to know
Reboot status as of September 2026: producer Jerry Bruckheimer says a screenplay is still being written, with Jeff Nathanson on a reboot draft and a separate Margot Robbie-centered version developed in parallel. At D23 in August 2026 Bruckheimer said the team is talking with Johnny Depp about returning, likely with Sparrow as a supporting character, but nothing is signed. Treat every casting rumor as unconfirmed until Disney announces it.
Dead Men Tell No Tales has a post-credits scene teasing a Davy Jones return, but with no sixth film dated, it currently leads nowhere.
