About Powell and Pressburger
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger worked as The Archers, sharing writing, producing and directing credit. 49th Parallel in 1941 follows a U-boat crew across Canada. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp in 1943 tracks a soldier across decades, then A Canterbury Tale in 1944 and I Know Where I Am Going! in 1945, both built around wartime Britain.
A Matter of Life and Death arrived in 1946 with a pilot pleading for his life between worlds. Black Narcissus followed in 1947 on nuns in the Himalayas, then The Red Shoes in 1948 on a ballerina torn between art and love. The Small Back Room came in 1949, then The Tales of Hoffmann in 1951. Powell died in 1990 and Pressburger in 1988.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with a shared company style, not a series plot, so release order is the viewing order. Titles vary by market, with Colonel Blimp often listed with or without The Life and Death prefix. I Know Where I Am Going! keeps its exclamation mark in UK credits. This guide stops at 1951 to hold the classic run together and skips later Archers titles.
