About Ralph Thomas
Ralph Thomas directed all seven Doctor films for producer Betty Box, adapting Richard Gordon's novels about St Swithin's Hospital. Dirk Bogarde leads the first three as Simon Sparrow, Michael Craig and Leslie Phillips take the middle entries, and Phillips closes the run. James Robertson Justice appears throughout as Sir Lancelot Spratt, which gives the series its continuity.
Release order matches story order closely enough that you can simply start at the beginning and move forward by date. The humour stays gentle and episodic, built on hospital mix ups, romance subplots and consultants versus students. Watch the seven in sequence to see Bogarde hand off to Phillips and the colour photography and location work grow through the 1960s.
Good to know
The middle order trips people up. Doctor in Distress from 1963 comes before Doctor in Clover from 1966, and Doctor in Trouble from 1970 is the finale. Television later reused the titles with different casts, so stick to the seven Thomas cinema films listed here. Each entry stands alone apart from returning faces, so there is no separate chronology to untangle.
