About Resident Evil films
Resident Evil films split into two runs. Paul W. S. Anderson directed six chapters with Milla Jovovich as Alice from 2002 to 2016, following the Hive outbreak through Raccoon City, the desert, Tokyo, Washington and the final Hive return. Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) from Johannes Roberts rebooted with game characters Claire, Chris, Jill and Leon in 1998.
Sony dated a new reboot from Zach Cregger for September 18, 2026 with Austin Abrams attached, returning to the horror roots. The Anderson films and the reboot share no continuity, so each run starts clean for newcomers.
Good to know
Watch the six Anderson films in release order for Alice's full arc, since Wesker and the Red Queen carry across all of them. Then treat Welcome to Raccoon City as a separate start faithful to the first games. The animated films Degeneration through Death Island follow the game characters instead and sit with the games rather than these live-action runs.
