About Sandy Powell
Albert Powell, known everywhere as Sandy Powell, rose through music hall and records before radio made his greeting Can you hear me, mother famous across Britain. The films cast him essentially as himself, a guileless northern comic stumbling through showbusiness plots, starting with Can You Hear Me, Mother in 1935 and Soft Lights and Sweet Music in 1936.
Leave It to Me and It's a Grand Old World both came in 1937, followed by I've Got a Horse in 1938 and Home from Home in 1939. Later pictures like All at Sea in 1940 and Cup-tie Honeymoon in 1948 fall outside this starter set. Watch the six in release order since each is a standalone vehicle.
Good to know
Powell was voted the fifth most popular British star at the box office in 1939, which shows how far a radio catchphrase could carry a performer. These films are modest quota quickies rather than prestige pictures, so expect thin plots built around his routines. The six stand alone with no shared continuity, and the guide is marked completed as the 1930s run is long finished.
