About Scarface
Scarface exists as two separate films built from the same 1930 novel idea about an outsider who claws to the top of a crime empire and loses it through pride. The 1932 Howard Hawks version follows Italian Tony Camonte in Prohibition Chicago, while the 1983 Brian De Palma and Oliver Stone version follows Cuban Tony Montana in Miami during the cocaine years.
Watch the 1932 film first, then the 1983 remake. They share no characters or continuity, so either works alone, but release order shows how the same story was retold for a new era. The 2006 game Scarface: The World Is Yours is an optional alternate sequel where Montana survives.
Good to know
Do not treat the 1983 film as a sequel, since Montana and Camonte never meet and their cities, decades and crews are unrelated. The famous motto connects them as theme, not plot. A Universal reboot has been in development since 2011 with several writers and directors attached, but no shoot date exists, so the two films stand complete for now.
