About The Secret Life of Pets
The Secret Life of Pets from 2016 follows Max and Duke through New York after a lost dog chase pulls them away from home. The sequel from 2019 splits the cast into three threads about farm life, a lost ball, and a white tiger rescue. Both films come from Illumination with Chris Renaud directing.
The shorts bundled on home video add small side jokes but no required plot. Super Gidget from 2019 runs with the second film. A third film is in active development with Renaud returning, confirmed again in June 2026, though Universal has set no date yet.
Good to know
Watch the first film, then its home video shorts if you want them, then the second film with Super Gidget. The shorts never affect the main plot, so they can be skipped without loss. The third film stays yearless until Universal dates it, since the June 2026 confirmation gave no window. Release order matches story order throughout.
