About Seijun Suzuki

Seijun Suzuki shot forty B movies for Nikkatsu 1956 to 1967. Youth of the Beast from 1963 breaks through in color delirium. Gate of Flesh from 1964, Story of a Prostitute from 1965 and Tattooed Life from 1965 keep the pulp. Tokyo Drifter from 1966 opens black and white then bursts color for drifting Tetsu.

Fighting Elegy from 1966 and Branded to Kill from 1967 on rice sniffing Hanada got him fired for incomprehensible work, then lawsuit won. Zigeunerweisen from 1980, Kagero-za from 1981 and Yumeji from 1991 form the Taisho trilogy. Capone Cries a Lot from 1985, Pistol Opera from 2001 close the run. Suzuki died in 2017.

Good to know

Watch in release order. The Nikkatsu firing after Branded to Kill splits the run into studio and indie halves. Tokyo Drifter white room finale needs the color journey before it. The Taisho trilogy plays slow and strange against the sixties rush. Tarantino and Wong Kar-wai cite the influence. Start with Tokyo Drifter, then Branded to Kill.
