About Sion Sono
Sion Sono calls himself the most subversive worker in Japanese film. Suicide Club from 2001 opens with mass deaths and a Suicide Circle trilogy, Noriko's Dinner Table from 2005 reflects on net loneliness instead of sequelizing. Strange Circus and Hazard from 2005 split perverse and street modes, Exte from 2007 turns hair extensions horror.
Love Exposure from 2008 runs four hours on faith, upskirts and cults, opening the Hate trilogy. Cold Fish from 2010 and Guilty of Romance from 2011 close it with murder and night work. Why Don't You Play in Hell from 2013, Tokyo Tribe from 2014 and The Forest of Love from 2019 keep the excess. Shorts and TV sit outside this core.
Good to know
Watch in release order. Suicide Club starts a thematic trilogy with Noriko's Dinner Table, not a plot sequel. Love Exposure first cut ran six hours, the four hour release is the one to seek. Cold Fish and Guilty of Romance form the Hate close with Love Exposure. The Forest of Love draws on a real crime case and plays darkest. Start with Love Exposure for the peak, then Suicide Club.
